5 Reasons Why to Design with Energy Storage

When designing a home, there are many factors to consider. We discuss 5 reasons why you incorporate energy storage into your design plans.

#1 Enables and accelerates the renewable transition!

Are your homeowners interested in clean and healthy living? Requests for renewable energy options are becoming more popular as people strive to live more sustainable lives. Aggressive climate goals and strong policy commitments require a higher percentage of renewable energy. Federal incentives, along with local or state incentives, have made the cost of entry lower for homeowners to acquire renewable energy. With the cost of solar energy at parity with grid energy (in some cases lower), the time is now.

#2 Solves a Problem with Renewable EnergySimply putting solar on the roof does not help existing grid infrastructure, it can hurt it. Energy storage allows homeowners to take that clean solar energy and store it for later use. The figure below outlines a typical home's daily energy consumption.

Solar generation vs. energy consumption

The photovoltaic (PV) or solar production generates excess supply during the day when there is not enough demand to use it. As a result, the clean solar energy is wasted (curtailed) or sold off to neighboring utilities. Energy Storage reduces grid strain and provides flexibility for homeowners to use their energy when they need it.

#3 Prevents unstable power locally

Unstable power is caused by the imbalance of supply and demand. Energy Storage prevents damage to homeowner's electronic equipment, shutdown of solar production, rolling black/brown outs, mandatory shutdowns, and inefficient use of solar energy.

#4 Enables decarbonized, decentralized, and digitalized grid

By having a supply of power locally, there is less reliability on the grid, creating energy independence for the homeowner. Incorporating energy storage into your designs, can permit Virtual Power Plants (VPP), which are a cluster of energy storage systems in close proximity that offer grid services to the local utility, such as demand response.

#5 Helps Achieve Residential Energy Standards

Higher levels of energy standards can be obtained by implementing energy storage into design.
